چکیده

Fuelwood is the primary energy source for most Bhutanese and comprises 70% of national energy consumption. Nevertheless, forest cover and fuelwood supplies have increased in recent decades. The Government of Bhutan is committed to renewable energy development, reduced fossil fuel use, and sustainable forest management, but has not developed its wood biomass potential. We suggest that promoting research and policies to increase managed fuelwood harvesting could help meet national energy independence, rural income and employment, forest management and biodiversity conservation objectives. Managed fuelwood harvesting will require site-specific assessments of resource availability, local needs and market demands, and rigorous monitoring and enforcement. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Energy Potential of Biomass from Conservation Grasslands in Minnesota, USA

Perennial biomass from grasslands managed for conservation of soil and biodiversity can be harvested for bioenergy. Until now, the quantity and quality of harvestable biomass from conservation grasslands in Minnesota, USA, was not known, and the factors that affect bioenergy potential from these systems have not been identified. We measured biomass yield, theoretical ethanol conversion efficien...

Tradeoffs in ecosystem services of prairies managed for bioenergy production

The use of prairie biomass as a renewable source of energy may constitute an important opportunity to improve the environmental sustainability of managed land. To date, assessments of the feasibility of using prairies for bioenergy production have focused on marginal areas with low yield potential. Growing prairies on more fertile soil or with moderate levels of fertilization may be an effectiv...

Quantifying fuelwood biomass in savanna woodlands of southern Africa

Most rural communities in southern Africa rely on fuelwood or charcoal to meet their domestic energy demands. These energy sources are readily accessible and often the only affordable means. Nevertheless, rising population densities and poverty levels are exerting pressure on unprotected natural woodlands. In many electrified communities, high costs of electricity have prevented a move away fro...
